Recommendations for Schools & Non-School Related Organizations

Due to the fires, air quality may be adversely affected in several parts of Southern California. The Los Angeles County Health Officer, Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding, recommends the following for schools and
non-school related organizations:

* Schools in areas where there is visible smoke, soot or ash, or where there is an odor of smoke are advised to suspend outdoor physical activities for faculty and students until conditions improve. This
includes activities such as physical education or after-school sports.

* In areas of poor air quality, individuals with heart disease, asthma or other respiratory diseases should stay indoors as much as possible even in areas where smoke, soot or ash cannot be seen or where there may not be an odor of smoke.

* Sensitive individuals should monitor their conditions and be vigilant about taking their medications as prescribed by their doctors. Individuals with asthma and related conditions should keep their “as
needed” medications with them at all times.

* Non-school related sports organizations, such as Little Leagues or the American Youth Soccer Association, are advised to cancel outdoor practices in areas where there is visible smoke, soot or ash, or where there is an odor of smoke, until conditions improve.

* These recommendations apply to other recreational outdoor activity, such as recess or outdoor lunch periods.
