Organized Youth Sports programs and classes will resume tomorrow, September 5, although the City advises residents to pay close attention to air quality before resuming strenuous outdoor activity. All Youth Sports activities will resume except those scheduled for Central Park. All activities at Central Park are canceled until further notice because Central Park is currently being used as a staging area for emergency personnel working on the Station Fire.

LOS ANGELES – According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), smoke from the Station Fire near La Cañada has caused poor air quality that affects all individuals in the San Gabriel Mountains, the West and East San Gabriel Valley, the East San Fernando Valley, and the Santa Clarita Valley. Areas of direct smoke impact include the foothill communities of Altadena, La Cañada, Flintridge, La Crescenta, Tujunga, Sunland, Montrose and Acton. The Los Angeles County Health Officer, Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding, urges all individuals in these areas, or areas where there is visible smoke or the odor of smoke, to avoid unnecessary outdoor and indoor physical exertion, such as exercise.

The City’s Sports Complex Skate Park and Aquatic Center remain closed today and all City-organized Youth Sports programs and practices are cancelled today at Canyon Country Park, Valencia Meadows Park, and Valencia Heritage Park. Other youth group reservations also remain cancelled at Santa Clarita Park, Bouquet Canyon Park, Newhall Park, and Old Orchard Park. Though classes remain cancelled, the City’s Sports Complex Activities Center and registration desk are open.

Central Park, which is currently being utilized as a staging area for emergency fire operations, remains closed to the public, as well. All recreation activity at the location is also cancelled until further notice.

“Due to air quality issues as reported by the AQMD, many of the City of Santa Clarita’s Recreation facilities will remain closed today to prevent health hazards,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid vigorous indoor and outdoor activity.”
