Fire Suppression Efforts in Sand Canyon Area

September 2, 2009 10:00 am

Los Angeles County Fire Department has notified the City of Santa Clarita that while the Station Fire remains “quite a distance away from Santa Clarita,” residents in the Sand Canyon area may see smoke and fire due to various fire suppression efforts going on today. The Fire Department is “going direct” with hand crews to help “tie in” the fire so it doesn’t escape. Possible “back burns” may occur as needed.

If there are any changes, the City and our residents will be provided with information immediately. Thank you for your support of our amazing fire fighting personnel.

CENTRAL PARK IS FIRE STAGING AREA

September 1, 2009 4:48 pm

Los Angeles County Fire has moved its emergency fire operations into the City of Santa Clarita’s Central Park and will use the park for approximately the next week as a staging area for the vast Station Fire. Because of it’s location and vast acreage, Central Park has periodically been used as a staging area for emergency fire operations throughout the years. Passersby will see fire personnel and equipment at Central Park, which includes preparations for the housing and feeding of approximately 1800 firefighters from the United States Forest Service and Los Angeles County.  Residents should note that the fire is not in Santa Clarita or heading our way.  The Command Post remains at Hansen Dam.

Station Fire **Update** Sept. 1 @ 12:00 p.m.

September 1, 2009 12:00 pm

According to L.A. County Fire, there is currently no concern about the fire impacting Santa Clarita or Sand Canyon. Fire personnel were able to do some back burns last night and dumped 20,000 gallons of retardant on the Santa Clara Ridge.

The current strategy of bringing this fire to a successful conclusion is dependent upon meeting critical resource needs and current weather conditions improving (cooling trend and/or increase in moisture).

Road Closures are as follows:

  • Angeles Crest Highway between Palmdale and La Canada Flintridge
  • All roads within the mandatory evacuation locations
  • Osborne Street at the 210 Freeway (Incident Command Operations)
  • Exits on Highway 14 are open; however, access is not permitted on streets eastbound toward the Antelope Valley

Air Quality continues to be an issue for the Santa Clarita Valley and residents are still being encouraged to limit outdoor activity.

The City’s Skate Park, Aquatic Center and Gymnasium are closed again today (9/1) in addition to Central Park (and Central Bark). Additionally, City Youth Sports programs and practices are again canceled today (9/1) at Canyon Country Park, Valencia Meadows Park, and Valencia Heritage Park. Other youth group reservations are also canceled at Santa Clarita Park, Bouquet Canyon Park, Newhall Park, and Old Orchard park due to air quality issues resulting from the fires.

The closures will continue to be evaluated on a day-to-day basis. Community members can call: 250-3700 for more information.
