Elsmere Fire in Newhall

The City is monitoring the Elsmere Fire burning in the area of the Northbound 14 freeway and Newhall Avenue. Please avoid the area to allow firefighters to access. More updates will be posted in this thread as they are confirmed.

UPDATE (1:50 p.m.): The fire is reported to be approximately 10 acres in size as of 1:50 p.m. with a high growth potential.

UPDATE: (2:00 p.m.): A second alarm has been requested as the fire has jumped the 14 freeway and is now on both the north and south sides. Avoid the area – visibility low.

UPDATE (2:08 p.m.): EVACUATIONS: An Evacuation Order has been issued for residents and buildings between Dockweiler Dr. and Newhall Ave., and from Sierra Hwy up to Valle de Oro.

An Evacuation WARNING is in place for the neighborhood north of Valle de Oro.

UPDATE (3:00 p.m.): The Elsmere Fire is now reported to be 200 acres in size.

EVACUATION UPDATE (3:18 p.m.): Incident Command has rescinded the previous evacuation order and warning for the area of Newhall, Valle de Oro, Sierra and Dockweiler.

THERE ARE NO EVACS IN PLACE AT THIS TIME.

UPDATE (4:08 p.m.): LA County Fire Officials report that forward progress on the Elsmere Fire has stopped and there is 30% containment. Acreage has been revised to 130 acres.

UPDATE (4:41 p.m.): The following road closures are in effect: 

  • N/B 14 at N/B 5: All N/B Lanes Closed
  • S/B 5 Transition to N/B 14 Closed
  • N/B 5 to N/B 14 Truck Route Closed
  • S/B 14: All S/B Lanes Closed Starting at Golden Valley Rd.
  • Sierra Highway between Newhall Ave. and Golden Valley Rd.
  • Placerita Canyon Rd. from 14 Freeway east to Pacy St.

Sand Canyon residents are asked to enter and exit neighborhoods via Sand Canyon Rd.

UPDATE (6:14 p.m.): Southbound lanes of 14 now open. Northbound will open within 30 minutes. Number 3 lane closure in both directions will be from Newhall to Golden Valley, and this will include closure of Placerita off ramps in both directions.
